Hello!My love for food started early—shaped by a childhood spent living in places like Germany and Greece, and traveling with my family. My mom sparked that passion while we lived in Europe, taking us on the road and introducing us to global flavors and traditions that continue to inspire the way I cook and entertain.
When I launched BDP, I was in the kitchen every day, cooking alongside my sister/co-owner. Though I’m rarely in the kitchen, I can jump into any role if absolutely needed. I still love hosting events—at BDP and at home—and I believe that sharing a meal is one of the most powerful ways to connect with others.
Outside of work, I rarely sit still. I’m usually hiking with my husband, Jim, and our dog, gardening, tending to my bees, playing Scrabble or practicing yoga—I’m a 200-hour certified teacher. I have three grown children who continue to inspire me every day.
It All Started with Aerosmith.
Big Delicious Planet is a full-service catering company creating beautiful experiences at venues around Chicago. Founded in 1994 by Heidi Moorman Coudal, BDP began as a backstage catering company serving rock stars, film crews, and photo shoots. Her sister, Ellen, joined as co-owner, helping shape BDP’s creative spirit and strong foundation during its first twelve years.
Our very first gig? Catering for Aerosmith at the newly opened United Center. That launch led to decades of working behind the scenes at major venues, festivals and film productions—cooking for thousands of rock bands and A-list celebrities.
In 2010 we moved into our third — and current — kitchen, a sun-filled 6,800 square-foot space in the industrial corridor of West Town. The following year, we opened our cafe, the Canteen, which quickly became a beloved neighborhood spot until the pandemic forced repeated closures. After three heartfelt attempts to bring it back, we made a tough decision to close it permanently in November of 2024. That same year, on December 6, Big Delicious Planet proudly celebrated 30 years in business — just blocks away from where we catered our very first job at the United Center. Today, we continue to craft unforgettable farm-to-table experiences for weddings, corporate events, and intimate gatherings, always guided by sustainability, community, and creativity.
