Big Delicious Planet is a 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant, and has been named "The Greenest Caterer in America" by the Green Restaurant Association! In April 2013, we became the first caterer in the country to receive the highest rating with the GRA. Read our press release here. We're very proud of this accomplishment and the steps we've taken toward becoming a sustainable business. We'll continue to make improvements in order to remain at the top.
Big Delicious Planet has been catering to some of the most discerning clients and palates since 1994 - rock stars, movie stars, politicians, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and cool people like you. We opened on a whim to cater backstage at The United Center for Aerosmith, and we've been rocking ever since. Our menus reflect our name - delicious food from all over the globe, plus vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes. We do it all.
What do our clients have in common? They want to hire a highly creative and trustworthy caterer who takes pride in the quality of their food and presents it beautifully, in a friendly, low-key manner. We have the years and clients to prove it.
BDP is owned and operated by Heidi Moorman Coudal, with much help from her great staff.
In 2010 we moved into a former 6800 square foot metal shop in West Town. Completely rehabbed with an energy-efficient geothermal system, we built out a gorgeous, light-filled kitchen with great work spaces, and plenty of room to grow. Our new cafe, called the Canteen, is located in a bright and airy room in the front of our kitchen. The Canteen is a casual breakfast and lunch spot frequented by the many creative entrepreneurs in West Town. Stop by and see us. Eat inside, outside or take away.
We're located in an industrial part of Chicago, and we're pretty lucky there happened to be some vacant lots next to our building. In March 2012 we began turning these underdeveloped lots into what is now our amazing urban farm. We're organically growing 80+ varieties of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers in 48 raised beds. We have 3 fruit trees. And we have a beehive.
Here's just a sampling of what we're growing: Tuscan Kale, Swiss Chard, Green Zebra Tomatoes, Rosa Bianca Eggplant, Japanese Edamame, Pattypan Squash, Mixed Greens, Sylvetta Arugula, Purple Haze Carrots, Chioggia Beets, Fingerling Potatoes, Lemon Cucumbers, Sweet Basil, Poblano Peppers, Nasturtium... the majority of what we're growing is being used in our Canteen and reserved for our rock star clients... but in our eyes, all clients are rock stars.
There is a growing movement toward buying locally grown organic food, and supporting small independent farmers. Destination farm-to-table dinners and meeting the farmers at the food source have become very popular. Typically, you'd have to travel outside an urban area to enjoy this kind of dining experience. Imagine only having to go to Chicago's West Town! Arrive to an intimate private event on a summer evening to delicious passed appetizers and drinks, followed by a garden tour. Then you'll be seated at our beautiful 20-person farm table for a salad or soup course, followed by a family-style dinner with plenty of options for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans, and end with an amazing dessert. We'll create each evening's menu with our own organically grown vegetables, combined with locally raised natural meat. There will also be plenty of beverages.
In 2010 we moved into a geothermal kitchen, and began working toward becoming a "green" business. This didn't happen easily, and took some time implementing positive environmental practices in our operation. Everything we've done is transparent. It's right on the Green Restaurant Association's website. Our main goal as a foodservice business is to reduce waste through an aggressive composting and recycling program, by turning vacant lots into urban gardens,
● We only use compostable disposable ware (unless requested otherwise).
● We compost all food scraps and biodegradable paper goods in our kitchen and Canteen, which is put into our garden and also picked up by a composting service.
● We donate all our used vegetable oil to a biodiesel service, which turns it into fuel for vehicles.
● We have a recycling system in place.
● A local shelter picks up our leftovers twice a week.
● Our cleaning chemicals meet the highest green standards.
We are always looking to improve, and will continue to make changes in order to become the highest rated "green" caterer.
Our cafe, the Canteen, is a hot spot for creative urban entrepreneurs in West Town.
We offer breakfast items and coffee from our neighbors, Intelligentsia.
Lunch offerings include prepared sandwiches, paninis, salads and rotating hot entree items every day.
Eat in our beautiful cafe, on our patio or take away.
